Towering sea cliffs, high moors, tumbling streams and deep valleys that shelter an unique Atlantic Rain forest. On Exmoor, it is still possible to find tranquillity and peace as well as rediscover a sense of adventure; to catch a glimpse of wild red deer, be amazed by dark skies full of stars, and explore villages full of character and charm.
We will be staying in the pretty medieval village Dunster, within the Exmoor National Park. With Dunster Castle, Dunster Yarn Market, Dunster Tithe Barn, and a wealth of listed buildings and hidden treasures, it will be a beautiful and fascinating base for us.
Our accommodation is at the Yarn Market Hotel in the centre of the village, which was recommended to us by a frequent Wild Rambler (thanks Sue). This cosy and relaxed hotel is tailor made for walkers, so we know we will be made very welcome. We are staying on a full board basis, so all meals will be taken in the hotel - they have a locally sourced menu which caters for all tastes.
We are really spoilt for choice with the range of stunning walks on offer in this beautiful part of the world…
-
We can head out to the coast, on the England Coast and South West Coast Paths, with fabulous views of the sea, and cute coastal towns. Perhaps, we will have a paddle, and eat an ice cream or two.
-
Inland, we can explore the sweeping moors and ancient woodlands; maybe using some of the Coleridge Way, the Exe Valley Way, or the Macmillan Way.
-
We will visit picture perfect villages, with ancient bridges and historical buildings. I suspect there will be some excellent tea and cake stop opportunities.
-
And at some point over the five days, we'll definitely use the West Somerset Heritage Railway as part of our journey.
We are so pleased to have the wonderful Barbara Hamilton along, which means that there will be two levels of walks each day.
